CONDUCTOR'S NOTE

Dear educators,

Welcome and congratulations to your students for being accepted into the Boise Philharmonic Youth Orchestra! I am looking forward to a musical and fun year.

This page of this website was specially created to house the BPYO educator's newsletter. The link is hidden from the rest of the site and only you have the exact site address.

As we move through the year, I hope to keep you updated monthly on BPYO and your students' progress. Here you will also find BPYO fliers for your classroom, and educator perks for our concerts and other events.

As we move through this year and the years to come, it is my sincerest wish to develop a strong relationship with the community of music educators in the Boise area. The luxury and high level of musicianship that we have the opportunity to acheive here at BPYO is only possible through your expertise and teaching.

Thank you for your continued support of the BPYO,

Deanna Tham

Music Director, Boise Philharmonic Youth Orchestra

BPYO AUDITION UPDATE

BPYO auditions were held on September 13 and 14.

As a change from previous years, the auditions were held blind. Preliminary feedback from the young musicians indicates that the blind audition helped their general nervousness and comfort level during the audition process.

A side effect of the blind audition process was that some older students did not have their loyalty to BPYO and seniority taken into consideration. Additionally, the front stands of the string sections are quite young.

This situation is rapidly being remedied. BPYO does hold itself to professional musical standards, as we try to provide as professional as possible of an experience for the students. Merit and ability is weighed heavily in the seating choices, but leadership ability, seniority, and loyalty are also considered. We offer our sincerest apologies for any inconvenience.

Additionally, string chairs will be rotated at each concert cycle. Woodwinds are rotated for each piece on the concert. Brass is the only stationary section, with considerations being made at each concert cycle. Our goal through the rotation is to allow for our young musicians to strive towards complete musicianship, leadership, and ensemble skills.

BPYO REHEARSAL UPDATE

-The first rehearsal of the BPYO was on Monday, September 15.

Repertoire: Berlioz, Roman Carnival Overture

Debussy, Fetes, from Nocturnes

Humperdinck, Hansel and Gretel Vorspiel

Borodin, Polovetsian Dances

Congratulations

--to Anna Black for earning the chair of Concertmistress for this concert!

--Gabriel Benavides (Debussy, Fetes) and Cidney Beitia (Borodin) for excellent preparation of solo excerpts for the first rehearsal!

BPYO still needs TRUMPETS, TROMBONES, PERCUSSION, and BASSOONS. Please consider urging your students to take advantage of the opportunity to play some substantial orchestral repertoire.

Our first concert is SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 8 at the MORRISON CENTER

BPYO BOARD UPDATE

The BPYO board had its first meeting of the year on September 15, 2014.

The board welcomed Deanna Tham as the new Music Director of BPYO and discussed the formation of committees to expedite fundraising, volunteer, and activity organization efforts.

Diane Camilo was selected as BPYO Volunteer coordinator and has put together a committee for the mobilization of parent and teacher volunteers at BPYO concerts, events, and fundraisers.
